We had a blast. While they were at specials, I assembled our "Mayflower." It was nothing fancy, but I still think it was memorable!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSvCUUSJFTLfr95_P4cVBEsudsG4GwO8XVchkXjNpZYiGO3LaU5rETYtWPLe917IvYvFpqHpl9Ob1ntpd4daYGEiI8nDDTr6YghwiNikNCD8mPvFvWQjAwja_7p-07chDzm4-UGILceY/s1600/IMG_5729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSvCUUSJFTLfr95_P4cVBEsudsG4GwO8XVchkXjNpZYiGO3LaU5rETYtWPLe917IvYvFpqHpl9Ob1ntpd4daYGEiI8nDDTr6YghwiNikNCD8mPvFvWQjAwja_7p-07chDzm4-UGILceY/s320/IMG_5729.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I bought plastic tablecloths for $1 at Walmart, some candle night lights from the Dollar Tree, and used tape to tape up the sides of the "ship." Once again, nothing fancy, but with the lights out, it was pretty convincing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9d7xzsZdkSu9Qp5LxVhUn37CUitUr7NoU0zF3tXS7SkGNlzwzVKvwOZ1osw6B9EVCSftRXNVriWqQXmnMoXqag_4RrBZvJeHRKo04cC_II9WX_l9K9uywwt_9GeX34XbINMcF_G7HbJY/s1600/IMG_5731.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9d7xzsZdkSu9Qp5LxVhUn37CUitUr7NoU0zF3tXS7SkGNlzwzVKvwOZ1osw6B9EVCSftRXNVriWqQXmnMoXqag_4RrBZvJeHRKo04cC_II9WX_l9K9uywwt_9GeX34XbINMcF_G7HbJY/s320/IMG_5731.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I did a search on You Tube for creaking ship sounds and found some great ones! With the lights out, candles on, and the ship sounds in the background, it was very realistic I think. I had the class cram into the small space so they could feel how they would have been very close on such a small ship with 102 passengers! I read them some of the conditions and scenarios that occurred on the Mayflower. We stayed "onboard" for about 15 minutes to talk about conditions and such. I have made them hardtack when I have done this in the past, but forgot this year!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqAHR7GccxVSqUKukFGReK-J6wRHemr-MNffapdnaMegUu7z_RdXAw0K5UEIWs1NXpmpv57cj0Ig7t_juoKLN3LJkxHmLxt5WSI-L4dqus6FbctdMKk5DFi6DA1K1dSYAwJGXfrQAalyU/s1600/IMG_5730.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqAHR7GccxVSqUKukFGReK-J6wRHemr-MNffapdnaMegUu7z_RdXAw0K5UEIWs1NXpmpv57cj0Ig7t_juoKLN3LJkxHmLxt5WSI-L4dqus6FbctdMKk5DFi6DA1K1dSYAwJGXfrQAalyU/s320/IMG_5730.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
When we disembarked from the ship, we conducted a detective mystery case that I got from a teaching book. The case was a clue left on the Mayflower, which was a note about the Mayflower Compact and how not everyone wanted to sign it. We then discussed the Mayflower Compact and did a Reader's Theater together. The kids loved it and I think it was a memorable lesson!Vanna, The Crafty Teacherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02351436784720510419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911468342693471859.post-74117852618489673122015-10-06T21:42:00.001-05:002015-10-06T21:42:08.397-05:00Jamestown Lesson: Fear FactorI am wrapping up my teaching of Jamestown this week. It is always one of my students' favorite topics! There is just so many interesting parts to it! We are almost finished reading "Blood on the River." If you haven't read this book, you should! It is awesome! My class gets so into it and it is very close to actuality (based on primary sources.) <div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSdblwZchncxOopecU7hjJ_cptqB062DCzJXvuOs3V2mygaWO3ShoJyfuPTBfQPTbF7xlc9lTdnP8kR42_WD2363KdHs9ppmsdOG-8ZORPBlpzDMiGqFLrTIgZSbd-1SmocdJvajc2mUc/s1600/9780670060603_xlg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSdblwZchncxOopecU7hjJ_cptqB062DCzJXvuOs3V2mygaWO3ShoJyfuPTBfQPTbF7xlc9lTdnP8kR42_WD2363KdHs9ppmsdOG-8ZORPBlpzDMiGqFLrTIgZSbd-1SmocdJvajc2mUc/s1600/9780670060603_xlg.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am always looking for ways to hook my students into history! I will do anything to get them to buy into my lesson.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yesterday we did a fun lesson that I call Fear Factor: Jamestown Style! Have you seen the show "Fear Factor"? The idea is that contestants have to face their fears to win big money! I think Jamestown would be like that in that the colonists were all facing very real fears, but instead of a monetary reward, they were trying to save their own lives! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I start the lesson with looking at some primary sources and having students analyze them together with their table groups. Students present their findings and earn points for their groups.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLxcFpU36Hnfhqqk6uBlBsVeQdvLiazQAR1M0FQap-SQJDG_8gFTLXIJnP56lzBTsgIItMSmHBcUvH6DJ5XYfBQPw6R1cpAw2iDroyu6z4Ksd7okvaw6uRXXb36G9OhuFsf4Yie9ADyo/s1600/IMG_5721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLxcFpU36Hnfhqqk6uBlBsVeQdvLiazQAR1M0FQap-SQJDG_8gFTLXIJnP56lzBTsgIItMSmHBcUvH6DJ5XYfBQPw6R1cpAw2iDroyu6z4Ksd7okvaw6uRXXb36G9OhuFsf4Yie9ADyo/s320/IMG_5721.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then, I have a food portion of the game! I go to the store and buy the most disgusting foods that I can find... like baby food, canned meat, sardines, picked pigs feet, etc. (YUCK)</div>
<div>
The students eat it up! (literally) The student to eat the food the fastest and show me that there isn't any left in their mouth, gets a point for their team.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I didn't get any pictures of the food part because I was so involved in watching them compete for their teams by taking down the gross food! Needless to say, there are plenty of kids willing to eat some gross stuff for the sake of points for their team. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I always make sure that the students don't have any food allergies before I buy anything and it is always optional to compete in the food portion.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, we tally up all the team points and then I give some kind of reward for the winning team (like candy or Dojo Points.) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think next time I will pick up some mints for everyone to enjoy afterwards to get the nasty taste out of their mouth from whatever they had to eat in the challenge.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a lesson that students keep talking about for days afterwards! If you want to see more and get the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fear-Factor-Jamestown-Style-2135899" target="_blank">whole lesson, here is a link.</a></div>

What do you do to hook your students in?</div>

As a fifth grade, we recreate the 2 ships that came from England to start Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. It is truly one of my favorite projects all year. My students look forward to it for weeks. I have been asking for streamers and masking tape donation for weeks too. Here are some pictures of the fun we had!<br />
<br />
Once "built" we sit in the grass inside to do a reader's theater and journal from the perspective of an actual passenger aboard one of the ships.<br />

I got this from my teacher that I interned under! She was the best! It is how I keep my sanity in the paper clutter that is a classroom. It helps me keep track of assignments that students have completed, when they turned it in, as well as who is still missing the assignment. That is how I track missing work. I keep them handy for everything!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB_dLBDseJuBEPbLssHLsvgRp9K5kqsj3q_o21_m6kN_0rw4lQlwmz_Nyow59NPRK4P33wX7VzYFvR4kNFj9uE0NMaaJ4_nLaZortq-J5g_aVYSEpWjgkAWgeIykCO9mhwhGSGgmG7MjY/s1600/assignment+check+in+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB_dLBDseJuBEPbLssHLsvgRp9K5kqsj3q_o21_m6kN_0rw4lQlwmz_Nyow59NPRK4P33wX7VzYFvR4kNFj9uE0NMaaJ4_nLaZortq-J5g_aVYSEpWjgkAWgeIykCO9mhwhGSGgmG7MjY/s320/assignment+check+in+3.JPG" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
When a student turns in an assignment in my room, they choose the folder for that subject area, pull out an assignment check list, slip it on the front of the folder, label it with the proper subject, assignment, and date, check their name, then put their paper in the folder in number order. Putting it in number order is SO important so that I can quickly check to be sure everyone who checked their name off actually turned it in, grade and enter them into the grade book (already in alphabetical order).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo70TBjh2pO1hZb8BOICR17Xo126hl1GgLH69I1raaviNCDzPkA7lLnaQ0JV9UaDNSXDroOj1DKvyqz0vy3Xo1SSnhwI6wAh3adFlUmCZyeasBX2iy5-ms-h0oXEUPYcV-2merEgmoVXk/s1600/assignment+check+in+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo70TBjh2pO1hZb8BOICR17Xo126hl1GgLH69I1raaviNCDzPkA7lLnaQ0JV9UaDNSXDroOj1DKvyqz0vy3Xo1SSnhwI6wAh3adFlUmCZyeasBX2iy5-ms-h0oXEUPYcV-2merEgmoVXk/s320/assignment+check+in+2.JPG" width="227" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK9WZqONS3VRHlyxQcUre4R10gJnMMvzk5f7_iH0vGEZLWo26_rcwCo9RWaqOvosk3VW7bKRBEp5-lEghyWbjEgi5Yh54kmdHTgK63y0ZcceFG8IpEtXT4jKSdHYfvLUqjzhXf3DNSV1Q/s1600/assignment+check+in+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK9WZqONS3VRHlyxQcUre4R10gJnMMvzk5f7_iH0vGEZLWo26_rcwCo9RWaqOvosk3VW7bKRBEp5-lEghyWbjEgi5Yh54kmdHTgK63y0ZcceFG8IpEtXT4jKSdHYfvLUqjzhXf3DNSV1Q/s320/assignment+check+in+1.JPG" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
This takes a week or so for my 5th graders to master, but it is SO worth it! It makes tracking missing work a cinch! I just circle the students that didn't turn the assignment in, then ask them for it every day until I receive it and can mark their name off. Sometimes I use the slips for writing down grades as well if I don't get a chance to put them in the grade book right away. I also use the slips for walking around the room for participation grades. I hope you find this helpful! An editable version is available <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Assignment-Check-In-Sheet-Editable-2087145" target="_blank">here!</a><br />

I had almost all of my parents and students come! That is a busy night full of new faces and lots of school supplies! To make things flow as easily as possible, I set up stations around the room for parents to stop at.<br />
<br />
<br />
Stop 1- signing in and picking up necessary paperwork that has to be signed by all parents for the school. I also made flip charts this year to give out to all families in my class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzAgPxARuPuS1EZzhMwn_4Esx-zfR4qBG4ySyMIT1IwquTSFTWc28VUeo-GTe-fG6uxzSzXHN7HnobwOIIXtIUugjrtKS8hBe_2Bjodav6xFvbn7A_twuql3l45QYMK04mMzSPtH7UGqU/s1600/IMG_5411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzAgPxARuPuS1EZzhMwn_4Esx-zfR4qBG4ySyMIT1IwquTSFTWc28VUeo-GTe-fG6uxzSzXHN7HnobwOIIXtIUugjrtKS8hBe_2Bjodav6xFvbn7A_twuql3l45QYMK04mMzSPtH7UGqU/s640/IMG_5411.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stop 2- choosing a seat... the students love this part because they like to pick where they will sit on the first day! (I rearrange my seating arrangements every two weeks or as needed!)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0NR-_VhIHz9WM7pVa2J9cep2xAjWOvAfezukzvB-p8YSj3ZzYyDe7BzMGa81HaUz1WpzD7HFg6NPCQ5Yks8T3ERY5xNq0DSvllFE-jqfgSjXU8g5tNca3seSl6ilOwJQMxrgj6w4S0A/s1600/IMG_5412.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0NR-_VhIHz9WM7pVa2J9cep2xAjWOvAfezukzvB-p8YSj3ZzYyDe7BzMGa81HaUz1WpzD7HFg6NPCQ5Yks8T3ERY5xNq0DSvllFE-jqfgSjXU8g5tNca3seSl6ilOwJQMxrgj6w4S0A/s640/IMG_5412.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stop 3- Parents were able to sign up for Remind 101, which we are going to use this year! I had about half go ahead and sign up, so I hope that the rest will join in too soon!</div>

I can't believe how fast the first two days went! If you have already started school, I hope you are having as great of a year so far as I am. It looks like I am going to have a great class! Yay! Here are some pictures of my classroom setup this year!<br />
<br />
<br />
View from the door. I made the leap from desks to tables this year! My school actually bought me brand new tables! That is unheard of around here!<br />

If you don't already read the Sunday night tweets, you're missing out! #oklaed Sunday nights at 8:00 central.<br />
<br />
I became a teacher because it is what I have always wanted to do. Seriously. My mom says I wanted to be a teacher before I even attended school. How I knew what school was all about, I'm not sure. What is funny, is I didn't always enjoy school much. I don't think it was actually going to school, but I didn't enjoy being a student. I always wanted to be at the front of the room teaching the class, not attending.<br />
<br />
As a little girl, I would practice being a teacher every day. I saved up my allowance to go to the teacher store. I would buy workbooks, grading pens, grade books, pointer, etc. I had a chalkboard and whiteboard hanging in my room to teach from. I would line up my dolls and make them do worksheets. I recruited my neighbors to be my students. I am even guilty of giving a never-ending spelling test that my mom stopped me mid-test because I was on number one hundred something. (I was a little bossy as well.) Every time my friends came over we had to play school. I was a bit obsessed.<br />
<br />
When I got to go to school, I loved my teachers. I idolized each and every one of them. I had great teachers growing up, which only fueled my passion to become a teacher. They would save their extra copies so I could take them home. I loved that! I try to keep that in mind as I teach today. Kids need to see that teaching is fun and many of them do want to become teachers some day. I am afraid that the low pay and increased pressures put on teachers is squelching the younger generation from dreaming that same teacher dream that I did. I want to continue to encourage young people to get into teaching. I truly love it, despite those negative parts!<br />
<br />
In college, I started by majoring in business, because of those obvious drawbacks in teaching. I looked at my class list and nearly cried. How boring the next four years of my life would be. My boyfriend at the time, husband now, said, "Are you sure you don't want to be a teacher?" I knew immediately I needed to change my major! I went the next week and changed it all over... looking at that class list made me giddy with excitement. I got to take classes that taught me to be a teacher? Heck yes!<br />
<br />
The rest is history... I continue to love teaching. I love it so much it consumes my life often. I am always thinking, jotting down ideas, Pinteresting, reading blogs, etc. to try to keep things exciting and fresh in my classroom.Vanna, The Crafty Teacherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02351436784720510419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911468342693471859.post-46057817112440775712015-08-11T14:16:00.004-05:002015-08-11T14:48:46.666-05:00UpdateHello bloggie world... Has it really been SO long since I posted?? I feel terrible, but life happened. In the last year and a half I have gotten pregnant, had a baby, and returned to teaching. All of those things combined, have resulted in zero blogging! However, I am jumping back on the blogging bandwagon and can't wait to start again! I have set some goals to get back at blogging and add to my TPT store as well.<br />
<br />
A little bit of an update...<br />
<br />
Got pregnant and prepared this beautiful nursery to welcome home our precious baby boy to.... It is "Oklahoma" themed.<br />

We are having a door decorating contest on Thursday. Here is my door. My favorite Broadway show is Wicked! I chose to incorporate it into my door decorating. I used butcher paper and oil pastels to draw the poster. I traced from a picture online on my Promethean board.<br />

I have been working through an online course lately that focuses on the use of Primary Sources in the classroom. After looking at a variety of primary sources for this class myself, I was inspired to open that up to my students as well. I know how valuable a primary source can be to children. They loved to look at, feel, and study "old" things. They want to know where it came from, who it belonged to, what it was used for, and how I got it. My class this year has been especially curious about the primary sources we have studied so far. They have even asked for copies of them to take home so they can look it it more closely. Some of the items I have used so far are a list of colonists aboard the Susan Constant, a map of Virginia drawn by John Smith, and directions given to the first colonists in Jamestown. In order to fit this into my already CRAZY packed-full schedule. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The result.... a center for studying the objects. I keep my centers or stations in lime green tubs that were purchased form the Dollar Tree. Inside, I have the primary source (this week is a quill pen, wax, and seal.)</div>

I have been seeing wreaths all over Pinterest lately! I decided to try and make one of my own. After <strike>one</strike> two trips to Hobby Lobby, I was ready to craft it up!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoX1r4FSUzBlRr3uWpJbccChZuLA83vlrYYLG7Mxnk1XidDy3ccDRs_tYm6nD1SSA9Fzcxxw9jVKrJJnCG3ZKpZR9geNpxnEKYHvc8zRb0gIDNHpsxBlUZgke-cljbPMXYPydA05NzIb4/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoX1r4FSUzBlRr3uWpJbccChZuLA83vlrYYLG7Mxnk1XidDy3ccDRs_tYm6nD1SSA9Fzcxxw9jVKrJJnCG3ZKpZR9geNpxnEKYHvc8zRb0gIDNHpsxBlUZgke-cljbPMXYPydA05NzIb4/s400/photo+1.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I decided to make an OU wreath since that is my alma mater and during football season, that is all my household talks about. I started with a basic wreath form. I bought the one made of straw-like stuff because the foam ones weren't big enough at my local HL, but whichever you prefer would work. I also bought two rolls of wired ribbon in my favorite burlap and chevron print. (I bought one and it wasn't enough, hence the two trips to the store.) I also used a hot glue gun, straight pins, twine, acrylic paint, and wooden letters.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. Start on the back side of your wreath. I tried hot-gluing down the ribbon and even stuck a few straight pins into the starting place to make sure it wouldn't come undone. Then run some hot glue around the next few inches and wrap the ribbon around it tightly.</div>

2. Continue adding hot glue and wrapping tightly as you go around the wreath. If you run out of ribbon, glue the end down and add a couple of straight pins to keep it down tight along the end. Start the next roll of ribbon the same way as above.</div>

Today I am sharing one of my favorite projects of the year. I got the idea from a friend who does it at her school. I loved it so much that I recreated it, and added a few aspects too. This is something that students look forward to for weeks and talk about for years to come!<br />
<br />
We build the 3 ships that came to America to start the settlement of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. We build them out of dowel rods, streamers, and masking tape. Once built, students get into the ships and do some journaling and a reader's theater that I wrote based on the book "Blood on the River" (a must-read for any Jamestown unit!)<br />
<br />
<u>So here's how we do it...</u><br />
<br />
1. I don't have a picture, but the day before, I go out and step off the measurements for the ships and spray paint on the grass roughly an outline for the ships. The measurements are included in my lesson pack.<br />
<br />
2. Assign students the name of an actual passenger on board one of the ships headed to America. This can be found online or in my lesson pack.<br />
<br />
3. Break students into groups of 3-4 students and give them dowel rods, yard stick, and a hammer.<br />
<br />
4. Let students lightly hammer the dowel rods into the ground about a yard apart.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSZpYWpwOzIyrGuYFZCZoZR7PfXL58E4VaBAxr58lE5_O37Q88aDelJuBHihls8isonfwhB1ldNOAl-Npj2DjE3VAzq7PPjZkMzZ5Q9ntiw6UT00jE5Sq7RUo4FCU6mwWmv36wA2ptWSE/s1600/DSC02409.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSZpYWpwOzIyrGuYFZCZoZR7PfXL58E4VaBAxr58lE5_O37Q88aDelJuBHihls8isonfwhB1ldNOAl-Npj2DjE3VAzq7PPjZkMzZ5Q9ntiw6UT00jE5Sq7RUo4FCU6mwWmv36wA2ptWSE/s320/DSC02409.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Students then run paper streamers between the dowel rods, attaching the streamers with masking tape. This is especially important if it is windy!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4d5lQGjiEMOzjAOrOeaKgeYf4x6HDugEZxumv72BJMWwVv9h-ynKUxhJcDw_G2VZ6o30FmDWZkg9sz6Q1SrkeAK6o_oi7HUX596vgj0dUWpGk3NVqoONtQgoSehPl_wC3H9HW0B9TKsQ/s1600/DSC02420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4d5lQGjiEMOzjAOrOeaKgeYf4x6HDugEZxumv72BJMWwVv9h-ynKUxhJcDw_G2VZ6o30FmDWZkg9sz6Q1SrkeAK6o_oi7HUX596vgj0dUWpGk3NVqoONtQgoSehPl_wC3H9HW0B9TKsQ/s320/DSC02420.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Continue adding streamers until it is as full as you would like, or you run out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Build all 3 ships and let students get "inside" the ships to do some activities. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. We do a journal prompt, asking students to put themselves in the place of the person on their name tag. They are asked to create a few journal entries telling about their journey to the New World.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. We also do a reader's theater, assigning parts and reading it aloud. There is one based on the book "Blood on the River" in my lesson pack or you could find one online.</div>

<b><u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Some helpful hints I have found after doing this a couple times:</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
-You need about 150 dowel rods (we got them donated from Home Depot)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
-About 80 rolls of streamers is needed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
-Spray painting the outline helps in controlling the chaos</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
-Invite other classes and grade levels to visit (our whole 5th grade does it together)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Whew! Between planning, teaching, paper work, discipline, meetings, grading, and everything else that we do, it can overwhelm you quickly... Leading to low morale and exhaustion. My school counselor and I decided that our staff morale was not what it could be and we wanted to do something about it! Insert.... the The Picker-Uppers! <br />
<br />
We deemed ourselves the Picker-Uppers because we want to pick everyone up when they are feeling down. We took up a small collection from our staff to fund our little project ($5-$10 each). Then we started looking on Pinterest and everywhere for ideas to pick people up. Here are some of the things we have done in the month since school started...<br />
<br />
At back-to-school professional days, we did a "photo booth" by providing fun props and a hand-held camera for our staff to pose for pictures with their friends and teammates. Our art teacher then took the photos and put them on an "Incredibles" poster for us to hang in the teacher's lounge.<br />

We made "prayer posters" by each table group at back to school meetings. They were just silly prayers for our upcoming year. Here are a few funny ones. Sorry for the blurry photos. My iPhone camera doesn't work right.<br />

<br />
The second week of school we gave out bubble wrap with directions that told them to pop a row every 4-6 hours or as necessary. This was a big hit... some were asking for a the whole roll of bubble wrap!<br />
<br />
We gave out little bags of glitter with tags that said, "Hello, I'm the happiness fairy. I've sprinkled happy dust on you. Now smile darn it, this stuff's expensive!"<br />
<br />
We bought coffee creamer to keep in the fridge for staff to put in their coffee in the mornings.<br />
<br />
We are having a tailgate-themed potluck today at lunch time and we got the principals to approve jeans for today! That boosts morale leaps and bounds!! <br />
<br />
I think it has been really effective! Do you do anything similar at your school? I will continue to share some of the ideas that we use!Vanna, The Crafty Teacherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02351436784720510419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911468342693471859.post-73332359561392866362013-09-11T16:00:00.000-05:002013-09-11T16:00:03.153-05:009/11I always find today to be a tough day to be a teacher. How do you explain to 10 year old's that there are awful people out there that want to hurt us? They just don't understand why anyone would want to hurt another country. I even had a boy tell me that "that is really emptying someone's bucket." How true that statement is. We just talked about being bucket fillers yesterday, so that really hit home to a lot of my class.<br />
<br />
In trying to explain this awful tragedy to my class, I searched for the best ways of showing and explaining the day without being too depressing or graphic. I wanted it to be a serious lesson, but still give them hope and pride for their country. They were genuinely interested in the topic as well. I used the handout created by "What the Teacher Wants." You can find it <a href="http://whattheteacherwants.blogspot.com/search/label/9%2F11" target="_blank">here.</a> It is a great, simple worksheet that students can fill out to reflect their thoughts and feelings about what we talked about.<br />
<br />
I also used Brain Pop's video. The 9/11 video was the featured free video today. <a href="http://www.brainpop.com/" target="_blank">Here is a link.</a><br />
<br />
In my searching, I also found myself at the 9/11 Memorial website. They have a lot of lessons and ideas for the classroom. <a href="http://www.911memorial.org/teach-learn" target="_blank">Here is a link.</a> They have so many great resources for children and adults alike!<br />
<br />
What ideas did you implement in your classroom today? Vanna, The Crafty Teacherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02351436784720510419noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911468342693471859.post-23051191695966143912013-09-06T16:36:00.002-05:002013-09-06T16:36:51.267-05:00Genre FoldableHello everyone! I have been looking for a quick way to review genres. We have talked about them and described them, but I needed something quick that we could refer back to in our reading journals. I couldn't find exactly what I was wanting, so I just made one! It is a simple foldable for their reading journals that has 12 genres on it. Please check it out in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Genre-Notebook-Foldable-863001" target="_blank">Teachers Pay Teachers store! </a><br />
<br />
Here is how it looks in journals. (So sorry for the bad pictures, my cell phone camera has decided to malfunction this week!)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Start by cutting around the foldable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCU28bLmHcfhdaviktdAPYb30-VXE1AvC4HyOqrHiBNHL6yDmH4Q4G9BZeMH50QyKCmDw1iNdXcj8LX6ZDnDNes1pW2LLF1YVAfPdokydiFT5UgA_3AhL_VzBx6DkYLp6xJVy9sRljz8/s1600/genre1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCU28bLmHcfhdaviktdAPYb30-VXE1AvC4HyOqrHiBNHL6yDmH4Q4G9BZeMH50QyKCmDw1iNdXcj8LX6ZDnDNes1pW2LLF1YVAfPdokydiFT5UgA_3AhL_VzBx6DkYLp6xJVy9sRljz8/s320/genre1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then glue only the sides that say "genre" on them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3u5FKUsVVMZft2pcK-e1inoEnAedcw-g-01pKEU4O8J8STYKoO-NKRCao3ixRkMtXVV8ZdZ19ZydKE7i_q9swmFAj07Grof4Wm_s3kqFk_s7rBunIomlGu2LtlT6muAavtgMcYdUB44c/s1600/genre2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3u5FKUsVVMZft2pcK-e1inoEnAedcw-g-01pKEU4O8J8STYKoO-NKRCao3ixRkMtXVV8ZdZ19ZydKE7i_q9swmFAj07Grof4Wm_s3kqFk_s7rBunIomlGu2LtlT6muAavtgMcYdUB44c/s320/genre2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cut along the dotted line up the middle, then between the genres.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB7oXsZ1AgQCEyievOwJYPWzH6_9n_DkyZ1EhBY6yb2p-OPhMOb3k7BhMupUBTrKxnxnxBjGNzy2Og6sRg8nhn-VBmYQSPCB42W7WuCVYDR5S7G2ZlJ3yDZWph6nOCgZGW-DElJ89j4OQ/s1600/genre4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB7oXsZ1AgQCEyievOwJYPWzH6_9n_DkyZ1EhBY6yb2p-OPhMOb3k7BhMupUBTrKxnxnxBjGNzy2Og6sRg8nhn-VBmYQSPCB42W7WuCVYDR5S7G2ZlJ3yDZWph6nOCgZGW-DElJ89j4OQ/s320/genre4.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It should have enough space on the back and underneath to write a description and a couple of example books.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVzQdBsLBA4JwH8i7x9-U_rhLk-uhf8UxZD-R4uj6E9LZRunGJKl9DkICUUq4hlnSad8dto5l1omBktCkVVSjF5H9R2qixwaLkhb78Oy1f-zhdtG2n78twDv_fh4jeKvT3qKzw253jMQ4/s1600/genre3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVzQdBsLBA4JwH8i7x9-U_rhLk-uhf8UxZD-R4uj6E9LZRunGJKl9DkICUUq4hlnSad8dto5l1omBktCkVVSjF5H9R2qixwaLkhb78Oy1f-zhdtG2n78twDv_fh4jeKvT3qKzw253jMQ4/s320/genre3.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Tekton Pro Bold';">Here is how I conduct my classroom economy that I use all year. I learned this when interning and have kept it up every year of teaching. The students love it, it's easy, doesn't require a bulletin board or anything special, and it works! What more could a teacher ask for? I have detailed directions below as well as a printable (front and back) of the transaction sheet you can use! Hope you like it. Please feel free to share how you use a classroom economy in your classroom too. </span></div>

I always give my students some money to start their account with (about $5-$10). I also pay my students weekly for their class “job” that they do ($5 a week). This can be anything from being the line leader to organizing the classroom library. Every student has a job that they have applied for and been given for a nine-week period. They know that if they aren’t doing their job, they will not get paid. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I come into class as we are starting that unit and tell the class that I am the Queen and will start enforcing some new taxes. I "tax" them for anything and everything I can think of. For example, I have a certain stamp they have to stamp their paper with before turning it in or they will be taxed; students must be taxed to take extra bathroom breaks; if a student needs more pencils or supplies than provided, they are taxed; Use of drawing or writing paper is also taxed. This really hits home with so many students. They then can empathize with the colonists and all the taxes pushed on them. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Tekton Pro Bold'; font-size: medium;">- If a student is doing something to another student (like pushing someone in line) I make them subtract money from their account and "give" it to the student they were pushing. This also applies if I see a student is getting someone else to do their job. They have to subtract the money from their account and the other person involved gets to add the money to theirs.</span></div>

I have been pretending it wasn't really going to happen. Like Google would just change their mind because the bloggy world is in an uproar. However, I have decided to make the leap. I did some research on what website I would use in place of ol' trusty Reader. I looked into Feedly, The Old Reader, and Bloglovin'. At the end of the day, I had to decide what my favorite parts of Reader were and how I used it. My favorite feature of Google Reader was the "Next" button at the top of my browser so I could view all of the blogs in their original form. I liked to see the blog designs and pictures lined up properly as the blogger intended.<br />
<br />
Insert.... Bloglovin'!<br />
<br />
So far, so good. I created an account and imported my blog list from Reader in about 2 minutes (just by clicking one button). It was super easy! Also, I am able to view the blogs in their original form by clicking on one. It opens it in a new window, which then has buttons across the top such as "older," "newer," "oldest." So far, I am really liking it! It is simple and easy to use. It has all the parts of Reader that I loved.<br />
<br />
<br />
I have read that Bloglovin' does not transfer over folders if you have filed things in Reader, but luckily I am not that organized! So no loss there. <br />
<br />
Any other people out there a Bloglovin' fan? (Professional Development Opportunitites)Anyone that knows me, knows that I LOVE to travel! I especially love to travel for free! Who wouldn't? During my summers "off" I spend a lot of my time traveling to various professional development opportunities. Today I want to share some of those with you in case you are interested in trying some of them out in the future! I will list the ones that I have been on, as well as some that I have not, but have heard great things about!<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1. <a href="http://www.history.org/history/teaching/tchsti.cfm" target="_blank">Colonial Williamsburg- </a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0I2TDVPrUsGRAJ7YkmFhV11EdU9MsvNjynt7Cw_TocZqSB5F0z33qqvWImTBmzP1h3jx10efYbZzMvevO97xhycPVhceh2SOl2WImEinDmX1gqJEYk9GaWGYQ3_oNDLD4s5dv0yxo1XU/s1600/DSC00170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0I2TDVPrUsGRAJ7YkmFhV11EdU9MsvNjynt7Cw_TocZqSB5F0z33qqvWImTBmzP1h3jx10efYbZzMvevO97xhycPVhceh2SOl2WImEinDmX1gqJEYk9GaWGYQ3_oNDLD4s5dv0yxo1XU/s400/DSC00170.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My personal favorite! I always dreamed of going to Williamsburg as a child due to my collecting of all things Felicity from American Girl (a doll and book series that they sold based in the Colonial time frame.) After my first year teaching, I learned that my great state of Oklahoma has a foundation that would pay for me to go to Williamsburg and go through their Teacher Institute! Heck yeah!! <a href="http://ofe.org/" target="_blank">Here</a> is a link to the <a href="http://ofe.org/" target="_blank">Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence</a> that offers scholarships for Oklahoma 5th grade teachers. I was sooo excited. I attended the Teacher Institute in 2011.... you can read more about that <a href="http://acraftyteacher.blogspot.com/2011/07/williamsburg-top-ten.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It is such a phenomenal learning experience that totally changed the way that I teach history in my classroom. You get to stay in colonial homes from the 18th century, immerse yourself in colonial history, and feel like you have been taken back in time. The Teacher Institute is a week long and includes your room, 3 meals a day, teacher materials, evening tours, and admission to the historical area and Jamestown/Yorktown. There are often scholarship opportunities that will also cover the cost of your flights. You can find more information here: <a href="http://www.history.org/history/teaching/tchsti.cfm" target="_blank">Williamsburg Teacher Institute.</a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">2. <a href="http://www.mountvernon.org/educational-resources/teachers-students/attend-program" target="_blank">Mount Vernon-</a></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">The Mount Vernon Teacher <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">I</span>nstitute</span> was a<span style="font-size: small;">lso a fabulous experience! I spent a week learning about all things George Washington. I wrote a se<span style="font-size: small;">perate blog post <a href="http://acraftyteacher.blogspot.com/2012/08/george-washington-teacher-institute.html" target="_blank">here</a> about my experience there. At this institute<span style="font-size: small;">, you spend the entire week staying at Mount Vernon<span style="font-size: small;">! You<span style="font-size: small;"> can walk around on the grounds even after it closes, which was amazing! We even got up earl<span style="font-size: small;">y one morning to watch the sun rise of the Potomac <span style="font-size: small;">River. They inclu<span style="font-size: small;">de your room, board, and teaching materials.</span> What a special experience<span style="font-size: small;">! I came away with so many neat lesson ideas and things about Washington that I never knew! <span style="font-size: small;">Once again, my state offers a schola<span style="font-size: small;">rship... but many other states do as well. <span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.mountvernon.org/educational-resources/teachers-students/attend-program" target="_blank">Here</a> is a link to their website that has what specific states offer schola<span style="font-size: small;">rship opportunities, including<span style="font-size: small;"> a stipend for flights. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> <br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">3. <a href="https://www.gilderlehrman.org/programs-exhibitions/teacher-seminars" target="_blank">Gilder Lehrman-</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">This one I have not been on YET! I have been accepted into the John and Ab<span style="font-size: small;">igail Adams<span style="font-size: small;"> Seminar. I <span style="font-size: small;">will be in Amherst, MA for a week in July to st<span style="font-size: small;">udy their letters to one another t<span style="font-size: small;">he impact they had on history. Th<span style="font-size: small;">at is just one of many, many <span style="font-size: small;">different seminars they <span style="font-size: small;">of<span style="font-size: small;">fer. I would love to attend the one on Thomas Jefferson, the <span style="font-size: small;">Constitution</span>, <span style="font-size: small;">or James<span style="font-size: small;"> Madison in the future!</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> A hint with <span style="font-size: small;">getting into these inst<span style="font-size: small;">itutes: <span style="font-size: small;">apply to become an Affiliate School! It only takes a <span style="font-size: small;">short a<span style="font-size: small;">mount of time and it increases your chances of being accepted into their <span style="font-size: small;">summer institutes. <a href="https://www.gilderlehrman.org/programs-exhibitions/teacher-seminars" target="_blank">Here</a> is a link to a list of all summer institutes and how to apply. These seminars include room<span style="font-size: small;">, board, seminar sessions all day, and a stip<span style="font-size: small;">end for flights. I will <span style="font-size: small;">definitely</span> be blogging about my experience while there! </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> <br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">4. <a href="http://www.neh.gov/divisions/education/summer-programs" target="_blank">Nat<span style="font-size: large;">ional </span>Endowm<span style="font-size: large;">ent for the </span>Humanities-</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">I hav<span style="font-size: small;">e not been<span style="font-size: small;"> to one of these<span style="font-size: small;">, but have heard great things about them. They offer various summer se<span style="font-size: small;">minars on topics like: the Underground Railroad, Thomas Jefferson, the Industrial Revolution, etc. <a href="http://www.neh.gov/divisions/education/summer-programs" target="_blank">Here </a>is a<span style="font-size: small;"> link to all of their <span style="font-size: small;">seminars and information on applying. They offer a stipend <span style="font-size: small;">to <span style="font-size: small;">cover expenses like room, bo<span style="font-size: small;">ard, flights, et<span style="font-size: small;">c. They often offer <span style="font-size: small;">rooms at the <span style="font-size: small;">uni<span style="font-size: small;">vers<span style="font-size: small;">ity the seminar is being offered at for a discoun<span style="font-size: small;">ted price. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> <br />

It was a fabulous week back in time. I wrote more about it <a href="http://acraftyteacher.blogspot.com/2012/08/george-washington-teacher-institute.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I then needed to write a lesson plan at the end of it all. I decided to create a Lap Book about all things Mr. Washington. I love how it turned out! It is now available at my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/George-Washington-Lap-Book" target="_blank">Teachers Pay Teachers store</a>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cover of the Lap Book: It is just a file folder with the openings folded into the middle. I then glued a piece of paper to the front and cut it up the middle along the opening.</div>

I know that I do! I have to find a way to manage it so it doesn't pile up around me! I can't stand piles of papers everywhere. (I am a little OCD when it comes to organizing!)<br />
<br />
My answer: this $25 cart from Sam's Club!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN9C-bSX_ooFrKVcOvXL211RWtlqAIvQGaqj9RIZeUgUODPqwNC55_AVIfF0b32QC_b8cgAQOBc-vO4dhmOStuCDkd-6VqsaMfHlrm63EhyphenhyphenFtihdyO5f0bqEF8p3U0yYsbUw2IC-oLyCc/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN9C-bSX_ooFrKVcOvXL211RWtlqAIvQGaqj9RIZeUgUODPqwNC55_AVIfF0b32QC_b8cgAQOBc-vO4dhmOStuCDkd-6VqsaMfHlrm63EhyphenhyphenFtihdyO5f0bqEF8p3U0yYsbUw2IC-oLyCc/s400/photo.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It has been an answer to prayers when it comes to paper! I used to have a slotted file holder on my desk to hold everything... but then it was all still on my desk! I had to try and look over it when visitors would come in my room. I just didn't like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My cart has been great! I have a separate drawer for each topic that I used to have a folder for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhESwJyJKP12MDbq4mzlxBEzkErGaYPxwqGEkBV6l2bFlskO7qVQ6lH-vJtRW9wLJkB8bCjuT0nGl5I2Q_Ghcf-gsTTojJGvxbSGWO4DvwjO5dD0dqI-3vRID56GATAqSAOg8EIxQzUXtA/s1600/photo2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhESwJyJKP12MDbq4mzlxBEzkErGaYPxwqGEkBV6l2bFlskO7qVQ6lH-vJtRW9wLJkB8bCjuT0nGl5I2Q_Ghcf-gsTTojJGvxbSGWO4DvwjO5dD0dqI-3vRID56GATAqSAOg8EIxQzUXtA/s400/photo2.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My drawers are labeled like this:<br />
<br />
<u>-Important Papers</u>-this is for anything that I need to save and have on-hand. I keep notes from my principal, log-in information, and any important documents that need to be at the ready.<br />
<br />
-<u>To Be Filed</u>-this is where I keep any extra copies at the end of the day, handouts, originals, etc that need to be filed, but I don't want to take the time to do it right then. I then spend the 15-20 minutes needed to file them all about once every week or two.<br />
<br />
-<u>To Be Graded</u>-this is where I keep all of my papers that need to be graded. As students hand in papers to our folder system, I paperclip them and put them in this drawer. When I am ready to grade papers I either take the whole drawer out or grab the stack and stick them in my teacher bag to take home.<br />
<br />
-<u>Grades to Enter</u>-this is where I keep papers that I have graded, but have not had time to enter the grades yet. I will often grade a few, stop, grade a few more, stop, etc. So, this is a central place that I can keep those random sets of papers until I am ready to enter them into our online gradebook system.<br />
<br />
-<u>Monday through Friday</u>- This is where I put all of the copies, teacher books, supplies, etc that I will need for that day of teaching. When I prepare my lesson plans for the next week I file things into the drawers as I find and plan for them. When I get my copies back (we have to send off our copies to a central office to be made) I file them into the appropriate day's drawer. Also, anything that we do every week (like on Mondays we always do a vocabulary foldable) I can keep those in the Monday drawer at all times.<br />
<br />
<u>Upcoming Weeks</u>-the bottom drawer is then for anything that I plan in advance and know that I will need in the coming weeks, but not sure what day of the week or when exactly I will use it. It is copies of lessons or tests that are coming up soon. I can then go through the drawer and pull those when needed to put in the appropriate day of the week drawer later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhESwJyJKP12MDbq4mzlxBEzkErGaYPxwqGEkBV6l2bFlskO7qVQ6lH-vJtRW9wLJkB8bCjuT0nGl5I2Q_Ghcf-gsTTojJGvxbSGWO4DvwjO5dD0dqI-3vRID56GATAqSAOg8EIxQzUXtA/s1600/photo2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhESwJyJKP12MDbq4mzlxBEzkErGaYPxwqGEkBV6l2bFlskO7qVQ6lH-vJtRW9wLJkB8bCjuT0nGl5I2Q_Ghcf-gsTTojJGvxbSGWO4DvwjO5dD0dqI-3vRID56GATAqSAOg8EIxQzUXtA/s400/photo2.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have a file holder attached to the side. I picked it up at Mardel. It is the perfect size to fit the side of the cart. I have a variety of folders in it that are handy to have close, but that I don't use everyday like IEP's, Referrals, Testing Info, etc.<br />
<br />

I have been reading "The Book Whisperer" and wanted to find a way for my kiddos to share book recommendations with one another. I have tried bulletin boards with the recommendations... but that never seems to get far. It is more of a requirement than an actual tool they used. I wanted them talking about their books and sharing titles. <br />
<br />
I just opened it up to my class for ideas on how we could do this. By combining a few ideas, this is what we came up with: <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em><span style="font-size: large;"><u><strong>Quick Talk, Book Recs</strong></u></span></em></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A "Quick Talk, Book Rec" is simply a fast-paced book chat. Students wander around the room while I play some music. When the music stops, they find a friend near them to partner up with. Once partnered, they share what book they are currently reading, (I make my students carry the book with them) tell a little bit about the book, and why or why not they would recommend it to someone else. The other person in the partnership then does the same. I give them 45-60 seconds to do this. When I start the music again, they meander around the room again and start all over. We do this 3-4 times each session. I try to do it every few days... but it just depends on time. The kids love it, and hopefully they are picking up on some new books to read! </div>

We started the lesson with reading "The Pilgrims' First Thanksgiving" by Ann McGovern. It is a great intro book that covers the basics of what occured and what led to the first Thanksgiving.<br />

We then went back in time to 1620, aboard the Mayflower. I showed my students the electronic field trips from the Plimoth Planation website. Here is the <a href="http://www.plimoth.org/learn/MRL/watch" target="_blank">link</a>. These 2 field trips show them what life was like for the Pilgrims, as well as the Indians. While watching the field trips, my students munched on Hardtack, ship's biscuits that I made them. You can Google to find many recipes... essentially they are dry, hard biscuits that have no flavor! My kiddos didn't enjoy them much! Haha.</div>
